Participants will understand the current balance of non-operative and operative treatment options that are available for the treatment of distal radius fractures in 2012. This will include an understanding of the anatomy, surgical approaches and choices for fixation for fractures of the distal radius including:
- Fractures in the elderly and in osteopenic bone
- Extra-articular fractures (AO Type A)
- Partial articular fractures (volar and dorsal, AO Type B)
- Joint depression (usually AO Type C)
- Complex fractures with carpal ligament injury, and
- Injuries of the sigmoid notch, TFC and distal ulna.
Description
This half day course focuses on the principles and data that direct our non-operative and operative treatment of distal radius fractures. A thorough assessment of anatomy, imaging and surgical approaches as well as guidelines for treatment is reviewed. Fracture type-specific surgical treatment options are presented, as well as the role of rehabilitation following treatment. A panel of faculty discusses numerous case examples to emphasize decision making in addition to technical pearls and pitfalls.
