Hand Smackdown (Symposium 8) - 2012 Annual Meeting (Syllabus)
Description
The "Hand Smackdown" is a college bowl type competition between two
competing groups. This year it's men vs. women! Approximately 45 minutes
before the symposium, five difficult hand surgery cases in areas of
Congenital, Trauma, Reconstructive, and Wrist will be exchanged in
addition to one "wild card" topic. The captains will then assign five
team members each to a case to discuss during the symposium. At the
beginning of the symposium, each team enters the arena and the emcee
will introduce the teams. Management of each case will be discussed for a
total of 3 minutes allowing for a 60 second case introduction by Team
1, a 90 second discussion by Team 2, and a 30 second rebuttal by team 1.
At the end of all the presentations the audience will decide which team
overall best managed their cases. After voting is complete, Dr. Strauch
will announce the winner and will issue a challenge for a new hand
group to take on the winner at the 68th ASSH Annual Meeting next year in
San Francisco.
